History

The association “Kulturvermittlung Steiermark – Kunstpädagogisches Institut Graz (KPI)” was founded in 1988; it emerged from the educational exhibition projects initiated by the art teacher and artist Max Aufischer.

Today, we use public funding to promote and facilitate the exchange and mobility of artists in the fields of photography, visual arts, and literature. With “KultRent,” we have established a resource for cultural practitioners, cultural initiatives, and institutions that goes beyond lending exhibition equipment: our mission is also about supporting the younger members of our society and creating visibility for their artworks.

We curate exhibitions in the photo and youth galleries in Graz City Hall. The Styrian Photo Biennial “photo graz” takes place every two years, resulting in the traveling exhibition “photo graz selection.” Kulturvermittlung Steiermark supports Graz’s International House of Authors with programs like IHAG – Writer in Exile and IHAG – Writer in Residence, as well as supervises the Grazer Stadtschreiber:in (Writer in Residence of the City of Graz) fellowship program of the Cultural Department of the City of Graz. Finally, the Artist in Residence program awards short-term scholarships to internationally active visual artists and photographers.
