Abdelaziz Baraka Sakin is one of the most prominent novelists and short story writers in Sudan today. He was recently forced into exile abroad by the current Islamist military regime in Khartoum. Although most of his major works are banned in his home country, allegedly for violation the Creative Works Law, his books are secretly traded and circulated online as PDF files among Sudanese readers of all generations. Sakin’s seminal work, al-Jungo Masameer al-Ardh, which appeared in English translation as “The Jungo: Stakes of the Earth” (Africa World Press, 2015), was the winner of Tayeb Salih’s Novel Award in 2009. His other novels include Maseeh Darfur (The Messiah of Darfur), al-Aashiq al-Badawi (The Bedouin Lover), and al-Khanadrees (The Khandarees); The Messiah of Darfur was translated into French and German languages and won two literary awards in France and one in Switzerland. Besides novels, Sakin published three collections of short stories, alaa Hamish al-Arsifa (At the Peripheries of Sidewalks”, Imra’a min Kampo Kadees (A Woman from Kambo Kadees), and Mouseeqa al-Azm (Bones Music). Sakin won the BBC Arab World Short Story Award in 1993 for his story “A Woman from Kambo Kadees. Two of his stories: “Bones Music” and “Color Physics” won the “Stories on Air” Award organized by the BBC and Al Arabi Magazine. His novel The Khandarees appeared in German translation in 2011 and is now taught as part of the curriculum of the Higher Technical Institute (HTL) in Saalfelden, Salzburg, Austria. He worked as English language teacher (1993-2000), child rights consultant for the UNICEF in Darfur (2007-2008) and director of development schemes under the World Bank’s Community Development fund in Blue Nile, Sudan. Sakin now lives in Austria and he writes for a number of prominent Arab literary publications such the Doha magazine, al-Arabi, The London–based al-Dastoor newspaper, and Aljazeera Net.
